The capital of Bolikhamxai province is Paxxan (Paksan), which lies opposite the Thai town of Beung Kam. It is a bustling commercial center and can be accessed by a three-hour bus journey from Vientiane. Highlights in the province are the Nakai natural area, home to endangered species such as Asian elephants and tigers, and Vat Phrabat, a temple and major pilgrimage site located in Phra Baat Phonsan and named after its relic, a large footprint of the Buddha (Phrabaat).
