Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park is a huge protected area in eastern North Sulawesi, northern Indonesia. The park is home to many remarkable plants and animals and is readily accessible from Manado.
Previously known as Dumoga Bone National Park and established in 1991, Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park sits in a transitional zone on the Minahassa Peninsula and features several endangered species of plant, such as the matayangan palm and black wood. Rare Cinnabar hawk owls and minute tarsier monkeys also live here.
Apart from the wildlife, there is also some pretty good trekking here. Kosinggolan has good climbing up Mount Poniki; Toraut is known for its lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs; Matayangan for its bird watching. The March Bolaang Mongondow Festival and the Gorontalo Festival in May are popular festivals to lookout for in the region.
Getting There & Away
Manado’s Sam Ratulangi Airport is 100kms to the northeast of Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park (a 3-hour drive) and is the main airport in the region. It receives flights from all over Indonesia, including from Jakarta (3 hours) and Makassar (90 minutes), as well as from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The best way to the park form the airport is to hire a car and drive via Toraut, turning left for Kotamobagu not far after the town of Amurang on the main highway. Buses also serve Kotamobagu from Manado.
