The ‘Mule Capital of the World‘ is set in eastern California and owes its name to Bishop Creek. Located at the northern end of the Owens Valley, it is just east of the Sierra Nevada. This tiny town attracts rock climbers from near and far for the many prime climbing spots nearby.
A good way to kick off your visit is by taking a self-guided tour of the murals dotted all around town. Painted by the Bishop Mural Society, the murals portray the history of the Owens Valley and Bishop. The Bishop Mural Society and numerous shops on Main street have brochures available for visitors.
Less than 16kms from Bishop is one of the prime rock climbing areas anywhere. Climbs range from those for careful beginners to crags that challenge even the professionals. The best three boulder climbing areas near Bishop are Happy Boulders, Sad Boulders and Buttermilk Country.
