Ben Tre is just south of My Tho in the Mekong Delta region in the south of Vietnam. It is a large island separated from busy My Tho by a 20-minute ferry ride and is a bit of a backwater.

The town is capital of the huge Ben Tre Province and features some stunning Delta scenery, including that quintessential view of Vietnam of paddy fields, palm trees and bamboo houses.

Although there are not too many world-breaking sights to see in Ben Tre, you do have good access to the Mekong Delta and organizing a boat trip from town is straightforward. Seeing the Delta’s many small channels in the area is a bonus.

The main sights in Ben Tre itself are the market, with its food stalls and numerous vendors, along with a rice wine factory, a coconut candy factory, and a floating restaurant not far from the town’s old bridge.

Getting There & Away

Regular buses and minibuses run direct to Ben Tre from Cholon and Mien Tay bus stations in Ho Chi Minh City. The journey includes the ferry from My Tho. Although the ferry is a short hop to the island, Ben Tre town is a fair way from the pier. Ho Chi Min City has the nearest international airport with 3-hour transfer times to Ben Tre.
