Although small, Batdambang Museum is one of only a few museums in Cambodia and contains a respectable number of ancient artifacts (some dating to the seventh century).
It is a good place to visit for those who have an interest in art and/or history or those who are simply looking for something to do in central Batdambang, provided it is open, which it randomly and frequently is not.
Most of the treasures here come from Batdambang Province and include a number of intricately sculptured lintels from nearby Angkor-era temples, such as phnom-banan. Among the highlights here are two statues of Bodhisattva that date to the 13th century and are marked with thousands of Buddha images, and a depiction of Yama, god of the underworld, riding a buffalo.
All the displays here are clearly marked in Khmer, English and French, allowing visitors to gain a good understanding of the exhibits. Also of interest is the Tonle Sap display, which is a tribute to Cambodia’s lifeline, depicting the ways that this mighty river affects the lives of the Cambodian people.
Those who are interested in the cultural practices of Battambang Province will want to step into the building next door, which features displays on local fishing and agricultural practices as well as folktales and local legends.
When to Go
Opening hours are listed as 8am-11am/2pm-5pm, though the museum is randomly, and frequently, closed during these hours, particularly on holidays.
Getting There
The museum, which is located along the western bank of the Sangke River in downtown Batdambang, is in walking distance of most hotels in Battambang.
