Bantayan is the most populous town on Bantayan Island, which lies just off the northern tip of Cebu Island. It is a charming little place where fishing is still the mainstay of local industry and tourism is kept low-key.

Things move at a relatively slow pace in Bantayan. The streets are wide and lined with the occasional Spanish colonial house. Of particular note is the 400-year-old church that was built during the Spanish colonial era in the 1500s and St Peter and Paul Church, dating to 1839.

The town’s market is filled with myriad species of fish that thrive in the rich waters just off the coast of the island. The market is a great place to experience the local atmosphere of Bantayan and pick up a snack at the same time.

Apart from wandering the listless streets of town, there are some stunning beaches right at the edge of Bantayan. The sand is soft, white and ideal for stretching out on. The sea here is clear, clean and perfect for a swim. If you rent snorkeling gear you can even see some tropical fish right off the beach.

Getting There & Away

Visitors can either fly from Mactan-Cebu International Airport on a 30-minute flight or take the 3-hour bus ride north from Cebu City’s North Bus Terminal. If you travel by land, you will end up at Hagnaya Wharf, where a ferry runs throughout the day to Bantayan Island. The voyage takes just an hour and drops you off at the town of Santa Fe]].
