Baing is a little town in the southeast of Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara, and is popular with surfers. Kalala Beach is the main attraction, with great waves from December to May.
Baing is 125kms south of Waingapu, the Sumba capital, and is really not worth the effort of getting here unless you are into surfing. Many foreign surfers on a shoestring decide to stay here for weeks on end and rent a small place cheaply near the beach.
Kalala Beach is a wide, sweeping bay with palm trees and golden sands. It has that away-from-it-all look and feel and is nice at any time in the May to November dry season. For the surf you need to head here between December and May to catch the best of Baing’s lefts.
Traditional hand-woven cloth is a popular souvenir of Baing and Sumba.
