Head for the southernmost point of Vietnam and you may find yourself wandering into the town of Bac Lieu, a relatively small and quiet destination located within the region known as the Mekong Delta.
Bac Lieu makes it onto very few pages of popular guide books and even when it does, it’s rarely given much more than a cursory mention. For this reason, the town is overlooked by most travelers; making it the ideal place for anyone needing a break from those Vietnamese towns and cities that suffer from tourist over-saturation.
Besides its Vietnamese population, there are a number of ethnic residents residing in and around the town including those from Khmer and Kinh tribes. Tourists are generally welcome to make visits to ethnic areas and, indeed, they are considered among Bac Lieu’s biggest attractions.
Getting There & Away
There are public buses from Ho Chi Minh City but Bac Lieu can also be visited on private tours arranged at travel agents in Vietnam’s largest city. Can Tho hosts the nearest domestic airport and is 3 hours away by bus while Ho Chi Minh City Airport is the nearest international facility.
