Also known as Attapeu and Attapu, Attopu province in southeast Laos is neighbored by Sekong province to the north and Champassak province to the west. To the east is Vietnam, separated geographically by the Annamite mountain range, while Cambodia sits to the south.

Parts of the province were devastated during the Vietnam War, with areas of the Ho Chi Minh Trail passing through Attopu. The capital of the province, Attapeu (Muang Samakhisai), is little visited by tourists and has poor infrastructure, with the main draw for tourists being the nearby Bolaven Plateau where coffee plantations reside. Parts of the Ho Chi Minh Trail can also be discovered with a guide.
