The municipality of Aparri sits at the mouth of River Cagayan in the province of the same name on the Philippine island of Luzon. The town itself has nothing particular to offer tourists but can be used as a jumping-off point for trips into the relatively unexplored surroundings.
Known as a haven for trekkers, spelunkers and gamefishers, the Cagayan Valley region provides numerous outdoor activities, with ecotourism in the fore. Local and foreign tourists alike continue to discover its 300 or so caves, above all the overwhelming Callao Cave that comprises seven chambers, with a natural cathedral placed in the first chamber which was converted into a chapel by the locals.
The province’s unspoiled forests and mighty mountains are well suited for trekking, mountain climbing and camping, while its clean rivers and seas are ideal for diverse water sports activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking and white river rafting. Aparri is famous for a fluvial parade on the Cagayan River’s lower basin conducted every May and attended by over 100 fishing boats.
