Situated to the southwest of Papua, the sleepy town of Agats has little to offer tourists and is mainly overlooked by visitors to this part of the world.

Although not the most exciting place on earth, Agats is a good place to use as a base for those who want to explore the Asmat region. There are a couple of decent places to spend the night here as well as restaurants serving traditional home cooked meals.

Agats is surrounded by lush natural beauty such as rainforests and swamp land. Situated up river from Flamingo Bay on the Arafura Sea, it is possible to take a boat trip around the area. However, there is little reason to spend much time in Agats.

Getting There & Away

The easiest way to get to Agats is from Timika Airport, which has connecting flights to the international airport at Port Moresby (1 hour). From Timika, take a bus to Agats (20 minutes).
