Richmond Travel Guide

The state capital of Virginia, Richmond is a small city of very distinct neighborhoods. Offering a great deal of heritage dating back to its founding at the end of the 18th century, Richmond is situated on the James River. The city is picturesque with an old downtown of cobbled streets which has undergone renovation following hurricane damage.

An innovator and city of industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, Richmond is today a modern city that has managed to preserve its past, with many of the artifacts on display here related to the Civil War. The American Civil War Center is one of the best in the country, complete with an old iron foundry used to build arms for the Confederate army. Visitors can also view the White House of the Confederacy where the former president of the southern states took office. Many of the significant people dating back to this period are remembered on Monument avenue.

Richmond features some idyllic scenery, most notably at Maymont Park, one of the most picturesque urban parks in the country, and at Belle Isle which lies in the middle of James River. This area is popular for mountain biking and has featured in a number of Hollywood movies.
