Patagonia Travel Guide

Magellan is said to have given Patagonia its name, meaning ‘giant’, when he first set eyes on what seemed like the oversized inhabitants of the area. It is the southern most region of South America and is almost split in half by contrasting landscapes, with the Andes to the west and south and plateaus to the east.

Patagonia’s landscapes of vast plateaus rising in abrupt steps of about 100m at a time are generally bare of vegetation. However, towards the Andes they become more bounteous and animal life becomes more apparent. From the penguin colony at Seno Otway to an array of fauna and opportunities for fishing between Rio Verde and Seno Skyring, Patagonia is a nature lover’s dream. Torres del Paine is a must for hikers, with well maintained trails and great granite mountains surrounded by crystal lakes.

Punta Arena is the most prominent city in the region of Patagonia. With a curious past and grand 17th century architecture, the city is a lively hub of activity and includes a handful of bars and restaurants and a duty-free shopping center. The city is an excellent base for exploration of the exquisite nature of the surrounding areas. Torres del Paine National Park is an UNESCO designated biosphere reserve and is among Patagonia’s biggest attractions, internationally known as being one of the world’s most unspoiled and remote places with astounding mountain backdrops, sparkling lakes and a wealth of flora and fauna.
