Bakersfield Travel Guide

Bakersfield in central California is one of the state’s largest cities, nestled in San Joaquin Valley, with the Sierra Nevada just to the east. While preserving its down-to-earth hospitality the city is a growing industrial hub and a center for arts and entertainment. Traditional old west architecture and historic animal fossils are just some of the attractions here.

The vibrant local music scene has spawned some top acts, including Buck Owens and Korn. The theater district in downtown features live performances, intimate dining venues and national touring theatrical presentations. The famous Crystal Palace hosts veteran country and western performers alongside up-and-coming young artists.

Outdoor fans can enjoy white water rafting on the mighty Kern River or hike among the famous spring kern wildflowers. Those who like a stiff breeze can do worse than to head for nearby Tehachapi wind farm, home to over 4,500 wind turbines. Art aficionados can choose from the Bakersfield Museum of Art and several galleries exhibiting local artists’ work and world-famous traveling exhibits.
